LEED

The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program is the standard-bearer for certifying sustainable design. The USGBC “is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everyone within a generation.”

While many in the construction industry may refer to their products and services as “sustainable,” it is a misnomer to refer to any one building material as “LEED certified,” as the USGBC only certifies projects as a whole. While a component itself cannot be LEED certified, it can contribute to your overall rating. NOW Specialties can make significant contributions to that rating, as we describe below. Please also see a brief list of the LEED certifications in which we have played a role.

LEED Credits are obtained from the following categories:

  • Sustainable Sites;
  • Water Efficiency;
  • Energy and Atmosphere;
  • Material and Resources;
  • Indoor Environmental Quality;
  • Innovation and Design.

Typically NOW can contribute to the LEED Material and Resources credits, and sometimes to Indoor Environmental Quality for interior work.

For ACM, NOW can contribute toward the following points:

  • Construction Waste Management: divert 50% or 75% from landfill. NOW shop and field personnel recycle aluminum and steel debris, which diverts that waste from landfills. Please note that calculations may be done by weight or by volume, but they must be consistent.
  • Recycled content:
    • 4mm Alucobond (polyethylene core)*                         26% (pre-consumer)
    • 4mm Alucobond Plus (flame-retardant core)           18% (pre-consumer)
    • 4mm Reynobond (polyethylene core)*                       42% (pre-consumer)
    • 4mm Reynobond FR (flame-retardant core)            33% (pre-consumer)
    • 4mm Alpolic (polyethylene core)*                               34.7% (100% pre-consumer + 50% post-consumer)
    • 4mm Alpolic fr (flame-retardant core)                       32.2% (100% pre-consumer + 50% post-consumer)
  • Low Emitting Materials: This LEED credit governs the selection of sealants and adhesives used on the building interior. Our suppliers Dow Corning and Tremco have low VOC content and therefore help contribute points under this section.

For roll-formed products and aluminum sheet or plate, NOW can contribute to achieving the following points:

  • Construction Waste Management: divert 50% or 75% from landfill. NOW shop and field personnel recycle aluminum and steel debris, which diverts that waste from landfills. Please note that calculations may be done by weight or by volume, but they must be consistent.
  • Recycled content: percentage will vary with each manufacturer
  • Regional Materials: for material extracted, harvested or recovered, and manufactured within 500 miles of the project site.
  • Low Emitting Materials: This LEED credit governs the selection of sealants and adhesives used on the building interior. Our suppliers Dow Corning and Tremco have low VOC content and therefore help contribute points under this section.

*NOW Specialties does not recommend polyethylene (PE) core except for signage, trim and embellishment applications, and never on occupied space over 40ft. Please also find our statement on the Grenfell fire, and our MCM procurement recommendations.
